the guy who died twice

The Guy Who Died Twice

The Guy Who Died Twice (Detective D.D. Warren #5), by Lisa Gardner.

This is a short story with a sneak preview of her soon-to-be-released novel, Never Tell. Gardner is one of my favorite authors although I haven’t had a chance to write anything about her books yet. But since I love mysteries, thrillers, police procedural, (e.g. here or here) it’s no surprise.

Description

Sergeant Detective D. D. Warren confronts the strangest case of her career in this exclusive eBook short story by the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

D. D. Warren was pretty sure she’d seen it all. Then a man walks into police headquarters, attempting desperately to convince the squad that he’s dead. Explaining to him that he’s very much alive, they finally send him on his way . . . and then hours later, he turns up actually dead. And it’s on D. D. Warren to figure out how and why the dead man died . . . twice.

Thoughts

This is a fun and easy read. I think it’s hilarious. Really, how would you react when someone approaches you and tells you he/she is dead? First, you might think the person is a nutcase. So, that’s what the detectives at the police station did. They tried to convince the man he wasn’t dead. They couldn’t very well tell him he needed his head checked. Anyway, they found his wife and sent him home.

If that was all, that wouldn’t involve the cops at all. Maybe a shrink. Well, lo and behold, later that day, they got a call. The guy who claimed to be dead is now truly dead.

The way the story is told reminds me of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot series. There is no explicit violence. Everything is rated G or PG. At the end, the detective calls everyone together in the same room. Poirot, in this case, DD starts telling them the reasoning why each suspect is no longer a suspect until the true killer is left.

This is a winner.
